We recently worked with a client in the San Francisco Bay Area who was having difficulty safely navigating a short interior step between living spaces. While this type of elevation change is common in many California homes, it can become a serious fall risk for seniors and individuals using walkers or other mobility aids.

In this case, the existing layout created confusion with multiple approach angles and limited footing—conditions that significantly increase the risk of trips and falls at home, especially for those focused on aging in place in California.

The family initially inquired about installing an interior wheelchair ramp, a common request for home accessibility in the Bay Area. However, due to space constraints, a ramp was not a safe or feasible option. Instead, our team designed and installed a custom landing platform, creating a larger and more stable transition area to improve walker accessibility and in-home safety.

This senior home modification now provides two clearly defined and safer pathways to navigate the elevation change. To further enhance fall prevention and mobility support, we installed custom handrails, built specifically to match the unique layout and profile of the home—an important consideration in many Bay Area properties with varied floor plans.

Client Feedback:
“The new steps fit perfectly and feel very nice and sturdy. The stain looks great, and I am incredibly happy that my walker now fits safely on the steps.”

The result is a highly effective home safety solution in California, improving accessibility, independence, and peace of mind—while preserving the comfort and functionality of the home.
