True independence requires accessibility in the kitchen, even in a rental situation. For a recent application, we were able to custom fabricate platforms to raise the kitchen floor and refrigerator thereby making the counter tops, sink and stove accessible. We added a ramp and railings to make it safe and accessible for all users. Attractive enough to be a permanent solution, and should the need arise, it is also readily removable without a trace of evidence it was ever there. As a bonus, the work was completed in a fraction of the time and at a fraction of the cost associated with replacing the cabinetry and plumbing. This cost-effective modification is a home run for all concerned – user, funder and landlord included.
