Home Safety Services Central Valley technician Toby recently related a client success experience:
“What started as a routine installation appointment turned into something far more meaningful. When I arrived at a 92-year-old veteran’s apartment, I was met with conditions that made it impossible to proceed—his home was in a state of severe disarray and neglect, with signs that he was struggling both physically and emotionally. It was clear he needed more help than just an equipment setup.
Though it was difficult, I had to file an incident report and notify the VA for a welfare check. He wasn’t happy about it, but he understood. He had no nearby family, and it was clear he was overwhelmed and deeply ashamed. We spent time talking, and I did my best to lift his spirits. I let him know he wasn’t alone—and that the mess was manageable with some help. Before I left, he thanked me for taking the time to talk, saying I was his “guardian angel” and that God had sent me that day.
Months later, I returned to complete the job—and the transformation was incredible. He told me our conversation had motivated him to reconnect with his Church. Through new friendships made at church, he received help cleaning up his apartment. Those friends now visit him regularly, bringing meals and support.
He later sent a heartfelt message to our office, thanking us for stepping in when no one else had. While I may have just been doing my job, it’s moments like these that remind us why this work matters. Sometimes a little compassion can spark real change.”
Thank you Toby for always putting the needs of the clients first!
